When I first thought about this, I didn’t really know what it would be for, or about. All I knew was that I wanted to write something down. Not that anyone would read it, or even care. But then again, it was never really about others reading it. It was more about getting something off my mind and onto paper (well, digital paper) and putting it out there.

So what subject do you cover first? I don’t actually know. You feel like you need to do something big, something important, something useful for anyone who comes across it. But let’s be honest, who needs that kind of pressure? I know I don’t. So this will just be a total ramble about absolutely nothing.

“What on earth are you doing?” said my wife, catching me hunched over my phone as I wrote this. “Nothing,” I said back, with far too much emphasis. “It’s never nothing.” She’d got me. Honestly, I think I’d rather have been watching something that starts with a drumbeat (those who know, know), but I had to admit it. “I’m writing a blog.” “About what?” she asked. And there it is. About what? They always tell you: find a subject, an angle, a USP. But I had none. Nothing. I just wanted to write stuff down. “Well, what’s the website called?” I knew this would happen. How on earth do I get out of this, I thought to myself.

Now you might be thinking, what’s the big deal here, Mr Loose Ends? Who cares? And you’re probably right. But what if I told you that whatever I write here can and will be used against me? It’s ammo. I’ve watched enough crime documentaries to know the right answer to anything is “no comment.” Give them nothing, and they’ve got nothing to use against you. Problem is, I can’t just write “no comment” on every post. Who’s going to read that? Then again, maybe that’s my USP. A blog that just says no comment, week in, week out. There’s a thought.

Anyway. “Well, you did say this…” or “why did you say that, I never knew you thought that.” The trouble is, I’m a guy, and on the whole we don’t think about a lot of things until we’re in a pub with friends, and then my goodness you can’t stop us having an opinion or opening our mouths. But what happens at the pub stays at the pub. Here, though, nothing stays anywhere. It’s all on record, dated and time-stamped, ready to be quoted back at me.

So consider this my disclaimer: no comment, on everything, forever. Except, obviously, for the several hundred words above.

Welcome to Loose Ends.
